What moves the gold price
Gold has no yield and no cash flow, so it is priced against the opportunity cost of holding it. The single most reliable driver is the US 10-year real yield: when inflation-adjusted yields fall, gold typically rises, and when they climb, gold struggles. The dollar index works the same way in reverse — a stronger dollar makes gold more expensive for non-dollar buyers.
On top of that sit central bank reserve buying, ETF flows, COMEX futures positioning and safe-haven demand during geopolitical stress. The terminal tracks all of these side by side so you can see which driver is actually leading price on the day.
Gold trading hours
Spot gold trades from roughly 6pm Sunday to 5pm Friday New York time, with a short daily break. Liquidity is thinnest in the Asia session, picks up through the London open around 3am New York time, and peaks during the London/New York overlap between 8am and noon New York — which is also when most US economic data is released.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the gold price today?
- The live gold spot price is shown at the top of this page in US dollars per troy ounce and refreshes continuously on the Gold News terminal. Spot gold (XAU/USD) trades nearly 24 hours a day from Sunday evening to Friday evening New York time.
- What is the difference between spot gold and gold futures?
- Spot gold is the price for immediate delivery of physical metal. COMEX gold futures are contracts for delivery at a future date and normally trade above spot because of financing and storage costs. That gap is called the basis, and it widens when interest rates rise.
- How do I convert the gold price per ounce to grams or kilos?
- One troy ounce is 31.1035 grams. Divide the price per ounce by 31.1035 for the price per gram, and multiply the gram price by 1,000 for the price per kilogram.
- Why does the gold price move during the day?
- Gold reprices against the US dollar, real yields on inflation-protected Treasuries, Fed policy expectations, central bank buying and safe-haven demand. The largest intraday moves usually land on US inflation and jobs data and on FOMC decision days.
